For our Jamaica mission as part of the Climate Actions for Building Resilience in Coastal Communities in the Caribbean (CABRIC) initiative, Research Associate, Kwasi Pierre met with a variety of gender-related organisations to learn about their perspectives and needs.

These organisations included CSOs and NGOs engaged in sustainable development, coastal management, fisheries, and the cultural preservation of Indigenous Peoples in Jamaica.

Key takeaways:

  • Women face challenges in accessing skills development programmes, and are underrepresented in decision-making
  • Institutional capacity building, particularly for ESS implementation is a critical need
  • Communication and engagement strategies should be more inclusive in terms of language considerations, particularly for Indigenous Peoples.

These perspectives are crucial for enhancing the gender-responsiveness of initiatives such as CABRIC which are aimed at addressing the vulnerabilities of coastal communities and accelerating climate resilience actions.
